A recent report from the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine noted that “the need to recognize and support caregivers is among the most significant challenges facing the nation’s swelling elderly population, their families and society.”
There are 45 million family caregivers in the U.S.; 70% are women; and surprisingly 25% are Millennials. Caregivers have poorer health, defer health screenings, and younger caregivers have significantly higher rates of cholesterol, hypertension, COPD, depression, kidney disease, and heart disease. Six out of ten caregivers are in the workforce; employer health costs for caregivers is 8% higher than the rest of the workforce; and $34 billion is lost in productivity due to caregiving.
Together we can help caregivers move from surviving to thriving
and help give visibility to this important issue.
I am pleased to announce the Caregiver Smile Summit, a virtual summit that will take place September 18-22, 2017. Each day will have a theme. The Summit will address aspects of aging throughout the continuum of care from aging in place to long-term care. We will teach people how to navigate the health care system and how to take care of themselves during the caregiver journey. In all we will have more than 50 speakers participating in 15-30 minute interviews and each day we will drop 8-10 videos for attendees to view.
Join me and my co-host Dr. Doug Fitzgerald for an enlightening event.
We are in the process of setting up our website. In the meantime if you are interested in helping us promote the event by becoming an affiliate or you want to be a sponsor for the Summit, contact me.
