Thanks to reader Laura Bramly who alerted us to this program in Australia. It is called the Sparks of Life program and uses music therapy, along with leaders trained as facilitators. Here is a link to a video. It shows two people with dementia who were unresponsive prior to taking part in the program.
It very much supports this notion of music as therapy and even more so supports the fact that you need to approach and accept the dementia or AlzheimerÛªs patients where they are. In other words whatever world they are in on a particular day that is the world you acknowledge and occupy. That is their reality.
If you should visit a nursing home be aware of the world that residents occupy and step into it. You will enrich their life and yours.
