New terms are being bantered about in healthcare. One is the accountable care organization. The idea is that a group of providers – primary care physicians, specialists, hospitals – would come together and be responsible for the cost and quality of care for a given population. In theory, and in talking with some hospital administrators, this organization could spread to include nursing and assisted living facilities, after all they are part of the continuum.
