Grief is Complicated

Grief is Complicated I had no idea that there was such a thing as Complicated Grief (CG). About 9 percent of bereaved older women experience CG, a serious and debilitating mental health problem associated with functional impairment and increased suicide risk.

The symptoms can include prolonged grief, frequent thoughts and memories of the deceased, and difficulty imagining a meaningful future. Typically grief is handled as a depressive disorder and well-known treatments for depression are used.

A study in JAMA suggests that that is not enough. Observations suggest that CG symptoms do not respond well to this treatment. Instead a treatment designed to help older individuals deal with complicated grief after the loss of a loved one appeared to be more effective than using a treatment designed for depression.

Authors M. Katherine Shear, M.D., of the Columbia University School of Social Work, New York, and colleagues enrolled 151 patients (average age 66 years) from the New York metropolitan area into a treatment program. For approximately half, they developed a targeted CG treatment (CGT) based on something called an attachment therapy model. The aim was to resolve grief complications and facilitate natural mourning. The model focused on loss and restoration. The others received depression treatment in which they discussed bereavement effects on mood, encouraged realistic assessment of the deceased, talked about the death and worked to enhance relationships and activities in the present.

The average time since the loss of a spouse, partner, parent, child or another relative or friend was 3.2 years. Both treatments helped improve CG symptoms. However, the response rate for CGT was more than twice that of standard treatment. There was a greater change in illness severity and symptom reduction per week also was greater in the CGT group. ‰Complicated grief is an under recognized public health problem that likely affects millions of people in the United States, many of them elderly. ‰Given a growing elderly population, increased rates of bereavement with age, and the distress and impairment associated with CG, effective treatment should have important public health outcomes noted the researchers.

HOW TO BE A SUCCESSFUL LONG-DISTANCE CAREGIVER – Smilecast 124

The Challenges of Being a Long-Distance Caregiver

(from Sixty and Me)

I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Amy Goyer, family caregiver expert for AARP, as part of our virtual Caregiver Smile Summit. We spoke about caregiving and being a
long distance caregiver.

Amy has been a caregiver for her grandparents and for her parents so she knows the long-distance caregiving space well. She cares for her father who has Alzheimer’s. And while she lives with him, she travels a lot for her work.

A Mother’s Day Song – How Can We Thank You

Happy Mother's Day

A Mother’s Day Song

I wrote this song for my mom some 30 years ago. I think I first performed it at her 65th birthday. That’s just four years away for me! I did it at our wedding. I did it on her 80th birthday, the week of 9/11 (the most emotional performance of all) and I sung it every time I was at her senior community. I hope you enjoy it and if you do share it with others. Happy Mother’s Day mom.

Cosmetic Surgery for Seniors – Three Popular Options

cosmetic surgery for seniorsCosmetic Surgery For Seniors – Three Most Popular

No-one is perfect, but lots of Americans are willing to pay a surgeon to help them inch a little closer to perfection – and this includes seniors. Recent research from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery found that over 84,000 people aged 65 or older had cosmetic surgery in 2010, and experts expect that this number will continue to rise.

There are lots of reasons why people consider cosmetic surgery as they age; it can help to boost self-esteem and help people to look younger – but which plastic surgery procedures are the most popular with seniors?

Face Lifts

The study from the ASAPS found that the most popular cosmetic surgery for people over 65 is face lifts, totaling 26,635 face lifts in 2010. A face lift is an effective way to remove fat and loose skin from the face, helping to reduce facial sagging and creases. This can make people appear more youthful and fresh, which is important to many seniors who feel insecure about the way they look.

Cosmetic Eyelid Operations

The second most popular cosmetic surgery is cosmetic eyelid operations (also known as a blepharoplasty), with 24,783 seniors undergoing cosmetic eyelid operations in 2010. This surgery is very popular, and while the final effects can be similar to a face lift the procedure is completely different. The surgeon will remove skin and fat from the eyelids to create a higher eyelid crease, and sometimes the surgeon will also add skin or fat to create the desired look.

Liposuction

The third most popular surgery for people over 65 is liposuction. In total Americans over 65 underwent 6,469 liposuctions, so this number is much lower than the amount of people paying for face lifts and eyelid operations, but it is important to note that liposuction is more invasive and more expensive. The procedure is used to help remove unwanted fat from the body, and it involves sucking out stubborn fat that is hard to loose through exercise. Normally the fat is removed from the buttocks, the hips, the thighs or the stomach, and there are three different types of liposuction to choose from; Vaser liposuction, Laser liposuction and traditional liposuction.

Whether you love it or hate it, cosmetic surgery is very popular in the US. And clearly it isn’t just young people who want to alter their appearance!
