Spice Turmeric Could Fight Alzheimer’s
(Vanderbilt University) Curcumin, a natural product found in the spice turmeric, has been used by many Asian cultures for centuries, and a study indicates a close chemical analog of curcumin has properties that may make it useful as a treatment for the brain disease.
“Curcumin has demonstrated ability to enter the brain, bind and destroy the beta-amyloid plaques present in Alzheimer’s with reduced toxicity,” said Wellington Pham, Ph.D., assistant professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences and Biomedical Engineering at Vanderbilt and senior author of the study, published recently in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

The Benefits of Singing Instructions to Dementia Patients
Researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine conducted a study to see if Alzheimer’s patients would be better able to recall new information if it was sung to them. Alzheimer’s patients and healthy control subjects were visually presented with the lyrics to 40 songs. Half of the lyrics were presented along with the original recordings. The other half was presented in a spoken format.
The Alzheimer’s patients could more easily recall the lyrics when they were accompanied by the musical recording. Surprisingly, however, the healthy control group did not experience the same memory benefit of the musical recording. The benefits of singing are many!

Caregiver Stress – Dementia patients may die sooner if family caregivers are mentally stressed
From 2007 until 2016, UC Berkeley researchers tracked the mortality of 176 patients and measured the mental health of the family members who took care of them.
Their findings published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, indicate that patients tended by those with depression, anxiety and other symptoms of mental illness typically died sooner than those being looked after by caregivers in good mental health. Caregiver Stress!
