April 5 Young Caregivers

  1. The United States is not the only country where children become caregivers. But we are at the lower end of the scale in terms of helping these children.
  2. Health care professionals need to look at the whole family when creating care plans and ensure the  contributions of young caregivers do not interfere with their educational and extracurricular activities.
  3. There are some associations that have tackled this head on. The National MS Society(https://www.nationalmssociety.org/Living-Well-With-MS/Relationships/Family-Matters#section-2)has special programs for children.
  4. Alateen(http://al-anon.org/for-members/group-resources/alateen/ ) has had support groups for children of alcoholic parents for decades.
  5. AFA Teens for Alzheimer’s Awareness is the official teenage branch of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (http://afateens.org/)
  6. The American Association of Caregiving Youth (https://www.aacy.org)has a major program working with schools to serve young caregivers.
