April 5 Young Caregivers
- The United States is not the only country where children become caregivers. But we are at the lower end of the scale in terms of helping these children.
- Health care professionals need to look at the whole family when creating care plans and ensure the contributions of young caregivers do not interfere with their educational and extracurricular activities.
- There are some associations that have tackled this head on. The National MS Society(https://www.nationalmssociety.org/Living-Well-With-MS/Relationships/Family-Matters#section-2)has special programs for children.
- Alateen(http://al-anon.org/for-members/group-resources/alateen/ ) has had support groups for children of alcoholic parents for decades.
- AFA Teens for Alzheimer’s Awareness is the official teenage branch of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (http://afateens.org/)
- The American Association of Caregiving Youth (https://www.aacy.org)has a major program working with schools to serve young caregivers.
