Caregiver Smile Summit participant Michelle Seitzer launched Caregiving Advice in January 2019 after two decades of working with caregiving families from senior living communities, advocating for family caregivers through a policy position with the Alzheimer’s Association, helping her own family navigate stroke & dementia caregiving for her grandparents, writing thousands of articles about caregiving, and becoming the parent of a special needs child with complex medical issues. Through these life and work experiences, she’s found that what families and individuals need most — regardless of their age or stage of caregiving — is quite universal: They need advice. They need resources. They need help. They need hope. And they need it from someone who understands caregiving from all angles. Seitzer seeks to help professionals and families better understand the impact of caregiving and find a starting point through compassionate support and practical advice. Through a variety of consulting services, she also offers practical advice to small businesses and startups on effectively reaching their target caregiver audience.

We welcome Terri to the Caregiver Smile Summit.
Caregiver Smile Summit Expert Terri is a senior behavioral scientist and a nationally recognized expert on veteran mental health. Her areas of interest include military and veterans health policy; military suicide; military sexual assault; psychological effects of combat, terrorism, and disasters. She has led multiple studies to assess the needs of veterans and to examine the readiness of private healthcare providers to deliver timely, high quality care to veterans and their families. She has also examined community based models for expanding mental health care for returning veterans and their families.
As the former director of the RAND Center for Military Health Policy Research, she spent a decade overseeing RAND’s diverse military health research portfolio. She was the co–study director for a large, non-governmental assessment of the psychological, emotional, and cognitive consequences of deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan entitled Invisible Wounds of War: Psychological and Cognitive Injuries, Their Consequences, and Services to Assist Recovery. She was also the co-director for RAND’s study Hidden Heroes: America’s Military Caregivers, the first representative study of military caregiving in the United States. She also recently completed a feasibility assessment examining the integration of DoD and VA purchased care approaches.
Tanielian has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and reports. She currently serves as a fellow in the Military Service Initiative for the George W Bush Institute. She was a member of the planning committee for the 18th, 22nd, and 26th Annual Rosalynn Carter Symposium on Mental Health Policy, which focused on mental health needs and recovery following September 11, Hurricane Katrina, and deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan, respectively. She earned her M.A. in psychology from American University.

Our Friday Song of the Week – Woodstock – What Are We Fighting For
After seeing Santana in Charlotte my wife and I were inspired to have a Woodstock party. Not taking my duties lately, I found the Woodstock lineup and all the songs that were performed. I took it upon myself to try to learn at least one or two songs from each artist at Woodstock in the order of appearance. Some artists or songs were so obscure that I had to skip them or I simply did not know the songs. For some artists I didn’t care for the songs that they did at Woodstock so I did another one of their songs that they made famous after Woodstock. I figured it was only appropriate to rehearse in my garage and to tape the rehearsal as opposed to going into my more polished studio and hooking up everything to my sound system on my computer. So what you’re seeking and hearing is my replication of our version of Woodstock complete with the garage band feel, me in jeans and a T-shirt and unshaven. Please pardon the surroundings, but I thought it would add some authenticity, but I hope you enjoy the songs. So here’s one by Country Joe MacDonald on Day 2 of Woodstock called What Are We Fighting For or the Vietnam Protest Song.

We welcome Jill to the Caregiver Smile Summit. Dr. Bjerke is an internationally recognized subject matter expert in aging/thriving at home, a senior safety expert, author and consultant and a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS). She is CEO and Founder of Home Transition Solutions Group, which encompasses Cut the Clutter Co., LLC (downsizing, housing transition, clutter elimination and creating safe homes), Silver Spaces (aging in place and home safety inspections and assessments) and the mobile app she created for doing the inspections called SilverSpaces (Silverspaces.com). The app is now being used in 12 countries around the world and is the only one of its kind that addresses senior home safety and aging in place decision-making. She currently has a podcast call “Right Now” on the wholecarenetwork.com and is on the editorial board of the Certified Senior Advisor’s Journal. She also volunteers for animal welfare and hospice and sits on many corporate boards.

Angela Brigance is Participating in the Caregiver Smile Summit
Angela is participating in the Caregiver Smile Summit.
Angelia had the privilege of growing up with her grandparents. As a result, she was able to truly understand the gift that the elderly are to us and the importance of treating them with dignity, respect, and love. This understanding grew into a passion for helping the senior community thrive, with a focus on helping people understand and communicate with those who have dementia. She uses her heart for Seniors to fuel herself to continue to be a leader in the senior community.
For the last 26 years, Angelia’s career has been focused on navigating the many challenges that seniors face. In addition to her years of on-the-job experience, she has an Associates Degree in Developmental Disabilities, a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, and a Masters of Science in Counseling. She has also successfully completed studies in Geriatrics, Validation, and Neurolinguistic Programming. Angelia’s experience and education allow her to successfully coach and train professionals, families, and businesses in the senior world.
Angelia is a member of the Washington Athletic Club Speakers Bureau and is published in their magazine. She has also been published in other local magazines on issues affecting seniors and was interviewed on New Day Northwest. She has taught communications, conflict resolution, and leadership skills for a variety of companies, including Starbucks. Most recently she was a guest teacher at Northwest University.
In the last few years, Angelia has survived a ruptured brain aneurysm and Stage 3 Lung Cancer, which has motivated her now more than ever to help others feel gratitude and optimism in the face of their own personal life challenges. Angelia is married with two adult children, one grandson, and enjoys spending the weekends hiking with her husband and two dogs.
